Well during a very damp night on the Island a very intriguing game was taking place with two unlikely opponents at the Island Garden Fall League. The opponents were Long Island Lutheran and Holy Trinity. The two coaches (John Lipani and Richie Slater) are very good friends and probably have spent countless hours talking about their teams and just going over X’s and O’s. So, it was fair to say there would be no secrets during this friendly game.
Once the ball was thrown-up it was quite evident
that these two established coaches were intense as they barked
out offensive and defensive instructions to counter the other.
This game was a cleanly played game for October as each team did
a great job of moving the ball and working for good shots out of
very organized offensive sets. Early in the game it appeared
that LuHi behind the floor leadership of Taylor Brown (the #1
freshman on the Island) kept getting easy baskets off her high
arcing jumper, hesitation dribbles into the lane with nifty
finishes or just a nice quality pass to an open teammate. As
Lipani squinted behind his tightly worn baseball cap and gave
instructions to his team, he probably said, “keep shooting” to
his team as they were frigid from the field in the first 12
minutes of the game. But the poor shooting would subside. It was impressive to see four teammates (Carey, Korsevinski, Orlando and Poppe) drive hard to the basket just to find a teammate open on the wing for a high percentage shot. Holy Trinity has been under the radar this summer but not anymore with four very capable players that are able to turn a game around in an instant. The final score was a resounding 54-32 in favor of Holy Trinity as LuHi lost their offensive rhythm and was held to eight second half points. Everything is not bleak in the LuHi Nation, first of all it is October and Coach Slater will use this as motivation to keep his team working hard or next time just bring the three players (Christina Ratti, Samantha Milhaven, Allison Hershlien) that didn’t make last night’s game.
