NY ELITE 15U
NY Elite 15 Burn
Out Shooting Stars
Jay Mumford
In more Silver Bullet Tournament action on Sunday, the NY Elite 15
unit rolled to 2-0, knocking off Chris Lanci’s Shooting Stars,
44-32.
The Elite’s 4-0 start was quickly answered by the pre-dominantly
Queens-based Shooting Stars, who got some firepower from PG Kelly
Rodgriguez and her Christ The King teammate, SG Kayla Ceballos. A
pretty stutter step keeper on the break from Rodriguez gave the
Shooting Stars an 8-6 lead, and their ability to bang the defensive
glass and limit the Elite to one and done possessions kept them in
the mix. A soft mid-range touch from Ceballos gave her three quick
swishes for six points and brought the Shooting Stars within a
deuce, 14-12, moments later. But a lull in late first half action
spelled a very lengthy field goal drought for the Shooting Stars, as
missed shots from near and far stunted their movement on the
scoreboard. The Elite didn’t fare much better from the field, but
inside buckets from Jaylen Brown and Amani Tatum opened up a 22-13
lead, and a triple at the half time buzzer from Meghan Roxas
(Ridgewood HS, NJ) made it a 10 point game, 25-15.
The Shooting Stars exploited the Elite’s second half struggles to
put the ball in the hole, and forward Aniela Sosnowski’s inside
points cut the deficit back into single digits. Defensively, the
Shooting Stars put up a valiant effort, as they kept the Elite
passing the ball for extended lengths of time in search of decent
shots. Rodriguez scored to make it a six point game, 33-27, but the
Shooting Stars couldn’t capitalize on their defense. The Elite out
hustled them down the stretch, and turnovers and missed shots from
the Shooting Stars came back to haunt them. A Roxas bucket rekindled
the Elite’s fire, and by the time Tatum gave them a 12 point lead
late in the game, they had outscored the Shooting Stars, 11-5, down
the stretch.
Jaylen Brown’s 10 points led NY Elite 15, while Amani Tatum chipped
in with 9 points and Meghan Roxas, 7. Kelly Rodriguez led Chris
Lanci’s Shooting Stars with 7 points. Kayla Ceballos added 6.
NY Elite 15 got their first win of the tournament on Friday night at
the Island Garden, dropping Running Rebels O’Connell, 54-49.
