Cunningham Catalyzes Kellenberg, Eyes Division III Jay Mumford The Kellenberg Lady Firebirds don’t always come out with enough fire. If they’re going to defend their Federation hardware, someone has to step in and turn on the pilot. Head Coach Meghan Moran knows who can always be counted on to start a blaze. “Katie (Cunningham) will run into a wall for you, she’s a player that you can always depend on”, Coach Moran said after the senior guard directed
Kellenberg out of an 11-0 hole and to an eventual victory over
Holy Trinity. Whether its her leadership via her championship
experience, her toughness via playing through a nagging knee
injury or her ability to flat out defend, make her teammates
better and score the ball, the Firebirds’ chances at a repeat
performance hinge heavily on the 5’6 Cunningham’s shoulders.
“From her experience on last year’s championship team and our
success, she’s been our catalyst this year.”Cunningham’s just over 13 points, 6 assists and 4 steals per game in conjunction with all of the aforementioned attributes have put her on the list of the peninsula’s top combo guards, in the driver's seat for Kellenberg’s upcoming quest for a title defense and in a new arena for the 2010-11 season. “I’ll be playing at Scranton University next year”, Cunningham revealed. “My top schools were Gettysburg and Montclair, but I loved the environment and the coach at Scranton.” Winning ways at Kellenberg and summer AAU stints with NYC Heat ensure that the Landmark Conference Division III school are in good hands with the acquisition of the Garden City native, but Cunningham still has a few games to go before shipping off to Pennsylvania. “Katie gets everyone going and does what has to be done”, said Coach Moran. “She takes it to the hole hard and can get people open, plus she plays excellent defense. Her and (Kellenberg’s star forward) Emma (O’Connor) just know how to win. Katie has the ability to overcome anything and has that will to win, and that will be huge for us in the post-season.” |
